The Recognizable Vincent Lombardi Superbowl Trophy

Easily one of the top three most recognizable sports trophies, and the most esteemed football trophy in the world, the Superbowl Trophy was renamed the Vincent Lombardi Trophy in 1970. Making it through the playoffs, then the conference championships, and finally to the big game itself, the Vince Lombardi trophy is given out to the winner of the Super Bowl.

The Superbowl Trophy was renamed in 1970 for former Green Bay Packer coach Vincent Lombardi who brought this team from last place to champions in one of the most famous turnarounds in NFL history. They won five league championships and two Super Bowls thanks to his coaching.

Unlike the Stanley Cup trophy which resides with the winning team for one year at a time this football trophy is actually given to the team to keep. A new one is made every year. Actually two new ones are made in case the trophy is damaged during the celebration. Originally the trophy was awarded in the locker room after the game but this has been changed and instead this much coveted football trophy is given to the owner of the football team out on the field right after the game.

This football trophy is quite something to see. Made completely out of sterling silver it stands twenty two inches high and weighs seven pounds. The trophy is a depiction of an actual football in the position of being ready to be kicked. The trophy is inscribed with its name and the National Football League logo. After the trophy has been awarded to the winning team it is then removed and engraved with the team’s name before being returned to its permanent home with the team. Each trophy is worth over twelve thousand dollars. The Dallas Cowboys, the San Francisco 49ers and the Pittsburgh Steelers, who won the football trophy in 2006, are all tied with five wins each.

Like hockey there are many other reasons for a football trophy to be awarded besides the yearly championship. There are player’s awards. But there are also a whole range of trophies given out for college football. These are almost as important as the NFL awards since the college teams, and so the players, are trying to do their best so they have a chance to play professional football after graduation.

I think it goes without saying that this trophy belongs in the hands of the Pittsburgh Steelers every single year from now until the death of professional football.
